I can still remember the first time I opened Elly Sienkiewicz's "Baltimore Beauties and Beyond, Vol. 1", back in 1989.  I was mesmerized by the quilts, blocks, designs, and instructions filling the book and realizing that these were the kind of quilts I wanted to make. It is one of my best worn and cherished books and I still recommend it to my beginning students as a good reference for learning needleturn. And while trying not to get too "mushy" it really did change my quilting life. 
     "From the Heart" is a 24" block featuring an ornamental border with reverse applique lattice work and acanthus leaves and curls. The floral design overlaps the reverse applique heart and includes a number of relatively simple dimensional applique techniques.  It's companion block Victorian Fan is shown on the next page.
